Steve is the communications director at GoodPower where he’s focused on narrative development to further the global energy transition. Previously he headed the communications team in the U.S. Energy Department’s Office of Policy, helping implement a suite of energy and infrastructure laws in conjunction with the White House, Capitol Hill, other federal agencies and outside stakeholders.
Prior to government work he started the Energy Transition team at Climate Nexus, a non-profit communications shop, which focused on communicating the health, economic and environmental benefits of clean energy in the mainstream media. He then headed the Digital and Media teams at Nexus before founding the Sustainable Finance team, which ran campaigns designed to get banks, money managers, and other asset owners to guard their portfolios against the risks of a changing climate.
He began his career in journalism, first at small town newspapers and later at CNN writing on energy, innovation and economic issues. At CNN he covered topics including the rise of renewables, the concern over peak oil, the spread of fracking, and the BP oil spill. He won awards from Peabody and the Society for Advancing Business Editing and Writing, and appeared regularly as a commentator on CNN television.
Steve lives in Portland, Maine and can generally sail short distances without major incident. On sunny days.
