WASHINGTON, D.C. – GoodPower released the following statement in strong support of the Energy Bills Relief Act, introduced by 120 House lawmakers led by Representatives Sean Casten and Mike Levin. The legislation is designed to expand domestic energy supply, modernize the grid, and strengthen protections for American consumers to stabilize energy bills.
“American families are struggling to pay rising energy costs, with 20 million households currently behind on their utility bills. Energy prices rose at twice the rate of inflation last year and families are left bearing the brunt.
The Energy Bills Relief Act directly addresses the drivers of these rising costs. It provides financial assistance and expands programs to make homes cheaper to heat, cracks down on price gouging from utility companies, ensures large new energy users including data centers pay their fair share and restores incentives for the most affordable new sources of power.
We applaud Congressmen Casten and Levin for their leadership to address the cost of living crisis by advancing renewable energy, the fastest and cheapest source of new electricity available on the market today. Congress has an immediate opportunity to modernize an outdated system so families can afford to keep the lights on and businesses can stay afloat.
This isn’t a red or blue issue–Americans across the political spectrum widely support solar energy and want leaders to act to lower household costs. Research from GoodPower’s Good Data Lab reinforces this point. In a survey of over 1,000 US voters, 76 percent of Americans are in favor of the legislation with support across party lines.
If Congress is serious about lowering energy bills, addressing affordability, and supporting working families, advancing this legislation should be a priority for Democrats and Republicans alike.”
